NNGroup: AI-Generated Images Match Stock Photo Performance

Summary & Key Takeaways

  • NNGroup conducted research on user perception of AI-generated images.
  • When users were unaware of the source, AI images performed as well as stock photos.
  • There was no "perception penalty" for AI-generated content in these tests.
  • This finding has implications for content creation and design workflows.
  • The study suggests AI images can be a viable alternative to traditional stock.

Our Commentary

This is a big one. If users can't tell the difference, or don't care, then the floodgates for AI-generated visuals are truly open. I'm genuinely conflicted. On one hand, it's incredible efficiency. On the other, it raises so many questions about authenticity, artist compensation, and the sheer volume of synthetic media we're about to drown in. It's a wild future we're building.
