Stop Making TUIs: AI Agents Make Native GUIs Trivial

Summary & Key Takeaways

  • Thomas Ptacek advocates for building native user interfaces instead of TUIs.
  • AI coding agents have significantly reduced the cost and effort of creating GUIs.
  • Simon Willison shares his experience with "vibe-coded" macOS taskbar apps.
  • The argument is that developers are running out of excuses not to build native UIs.
  • Building native UIs can fundamentally change a developer's approach to tools.

Our Commentary

This is a really interesting take. I've always been a fan of CLI tools, but the idea that AI can make native GUIs almost as easy to spin up is genuinely thought-provoking. We've seen the rise of "vibe-coding" for quick scripts; applying that to UI feels like a natural progression. It makes me wonder if the next generation of developer tools will be far more visually rich, even for personal use.
